Seaching for others reseaching the families Schreiber, Eichwald and/or Drius (sp? poss. Dries or Drees?) from Grosswerder, Ekaterinaslav, Russia (Ukraine), or from the first Ukraine Grosswerder village, from which these families moved.

My grandfather Conrad Schreiber and his first wife Maria (Eichwald) and three children came to Canada from Grosswerder, Ekaterinaslav in 1909. His 2nd wife Helena Eichwald came to Canada in 1928, after Maria (her sister) had passed away. We have the name of both Conrad and Helena's parents (from the marriage certificate of Conrad and his 2nd wife Helena), but the trail ends there at the moment. We also have some village information and a few photos from Conrad's sister's family (Eva (Schreiber) Sheck) that show what their brick houses were like as well as some modern photos of the area.

Conrad (Konrad?)'s parents were: Joannis Schreiber and Elisabeth Drius
Helena (and Maria"s) parents were: Joseph Eichwald and Anna Drius

Conrad had a sister, Eva, who also moved to Canada, but the other sibling's family fates are unknown. Conrad always thought one of his brothers may have moved to the US, but he didn't know. A Helena Sperling seemed to have travelled with them in 1909.

In the Karl Stumpp book on page 436 it lists a Heinrich Schreiber in Grosswerder in 1767. Possible connection? I did not find any listings for Eichwald or Drius. On page 249 and page 916 there is a Heinrich Drawe in Weinau/Taurida. Another possible connection.

If you go to http://www.blackseagr.org/learn_crimea.html you will learn about this area. Do you know the religion of the family? On the Crimea/Taurida page you will find information regarding church records. The St. Petersburg Lutheran records are online for many of the villages but Catholic records are harder to come by.

Make sure you check out the Black Sea German database for these surnames too http://www.blackseagr.org/blksea-db/searchform.php and the Odessa Digital Library http://www.odessa3.org/collections.html.

Good luck and I hope these suggestions help.

Gayla

Thanks Gayla,

I have previously found information on the area, and have been in contact with Morris Knorr, who has done lots of research, travelling there as well, and who provided me with a few photos.

What I'm really seeking is a connection between the family I know of from that area (grandparents, greatgrandparents and a couple of aunts and uncles) and the older information that is available in historical records. We also don't have anyone in the family who was reunited later with family they lost contact with during the war, so finding people who were nieces and nephews of my grandparents would be wonderful too. The ties of communication between Europe and North America went quiet at that point, and my grandparents were not asked about that kind of information while they were alive :(

The Heinrich Schreiber is probably related, so thank you. We have no idea how, as our line at the moment ends around 1850 or so. It does make it clear that my next genealogical purchase will finally be the Karl Stumpp book.

My grandmother's name, Eichwald, was also the name of a town pretty close to Grosswerder.
These families were, as far back as we know, Catholic.

Thanks again
Nicole

Nicole,

There is a digital version of the Stumpp book available from AHSGR which makes searching for all mentions of a surname infinitely easier but also makes reading the book much harder. I also believe the electronic copy does not include the maps that come with the printed book although it does mention the maps on the AHSGR Store page (they probably just reused the description from the printed version):

Nicole,

If you have a family tree you might consider submitting it to the Black Sea German Research database. We have found that if your family tree is included, people are comfortable with connecting with you and will share their information as well. Directions for submitting a family tree can be found at http://www.blackseagr.org/gedcom-submit.html.

Check the database often as new trees are added weekly.

Good luck with your research and we hope you connect with many new cousins.

Hi Peter,

Do you know if the Grosswerder 1850 Census is from Grosswerder, Ekaterinislav province or the other, larger village that it sprang from, in Tcher. province? Also, where did you get access to the census?

In the 1850 census, do you have any direct anscestors?

Hi.
The Census is from the village of Großwerder in Ekaterinoslav. There are no ancestors of mine in it. My Ancestors went to Taganrog area directly from Kreschatten, Poltawa or Tschernigow area. I have a contact person, which has copies of the census, but provides information only for money. Peter

There are Lutheran records for the Belowesch (Grunau) villages in Ekatarinoslav and the Chernigov region online at the LDS Family History Center online pilot. They are, however, written in the old German script.

The address to access these records is:

Chernigov Records:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/ima ... nt/5791638

Belowesch Ekatarinoslav records:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/ima ... nt/5791750

If these links don't work for you, let me know.
