I am researching the Kiemele family from Germany to Neu Freudental, to Emmons County, North Dakota. My great grandmother was Juliana Kiemele and she married Friedrich Wohl. They settled in Emmonsburg, ND. They brought 15 children into the world. My personal website http://www.ohlhauser.net has a picture of Juliana and additional information regarding this family. Would love to connect to other Kiemele family researchers.

Regards,
Gayla Ohlhauser Aspenleiter

My paternal grandmother was Emma nee Kiemele and she emigrated from Ukraine in about 1906, settling on a farm with her husband Fred Vollmer near Wing, ND. I have always wondered if Kiemele was a Jewish name. They never talked about the old country and wouldn't answer any but the most general questions. There was a sense it was a scandal when they got married.

Hi John,

I do not think Kiemele is a Jewish name. The Kiemele name is Lutheran and they lived in Lutheran villages in South Russia. Do you know who Emma's parent's were? I have been tracing the Kiemele family for many years (my great grandmother was Julianna Kiemele married to Friedrich Wohl) and I have her in the family tree that I have been working on but I have not been able to connect her to my family. I am sure if we go back far enough, we are related.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
Gayla

Gayla,

I finally found some info on Vollmer/Kiemele family:

My grandfather: Friedrich Vollmer, birthplace, Odessa

His father: Jacob Vollmer, Odessa

Mother: Christiana Eichele, Odessa

Jacob's father: Jacob, Odessa Mother?

Nothing more on Christiana

My grandmother: Emma Vollmer nee Kiemele, born Odessa, Russia

Her father: Christ Kiemele, birthplace Odessa

Her mother: Katie Granmiller, born Odessa

Christ's father: Christiens Kiemele, born Odessa

Mother: Pieff (?), Odessa

Katie's father: Frederick Granmiller, born Germany

Katie's mother: Elizabeth Butman, Germany

Hi John,
I looked in the Black Sea German Research database and it has an Emma Kiemele married to Friedrich Vollmer. They were married 14 Nov 1906 according to the Neu Freudental Parish Marriage records (fond 894-1-17). As for Emma's parents, could they be Christian Kiemele and Catharina Kronmuller? Reason I ask is that there is no Granmiller listed in the Grossliebental District of Odessa. Christian and Catharina (Kronmuller) were from Neu Freudental and Christian's father was Andreas Kiemele born about 1815 and married to Elisabetha Pfaff from the village of Freudental.

And I also see that Catharina Kronmuller's parents were Friedrich Kronmuller (born about 1814) and Maria Elisabetha Buttmann (born about 1824).

Do you know if Emma had any siblings and if so, what were their names?

Hope this helps.

Gayla
